š® The Austin Taco Scene
Hey yāallāChristian and Maggie here! One thing you learn pretty quickly when you live in Austin: tacos are basically a food group. Morning meeting? Grab a breakfast taco. Midday slump? Fajita taco. Late night craving? Yup, taco truck.
But hereās the thingāif you're not from Texas, your idea of a ātacoā might be a little different than what you'll find here in Austin. Think less crunchy yellow shell and shredded lettuce⦠and more warm tortillas, flavorful fillings, and maybe even a little salsa that kicks back.
Weāve lived in Austin for over a decade now, and while the taco scene here is constantly evolving (seriouslyāthere's always a new truck or brick-and-mortar to try), here are some of our tried-and-true faves:
š Christianās Top Picks
š„© Fajita Tacos from Mattās El Rancho
If you know, you know. Thereās something magical about Mattās sizzling beef fajitas wrapped in a warm tortillaāclassic, filling, and hits the spot every time. Bonus: grab a margarita while you're at it.
š„ Veracruz All Natural
Hands down one of the best taco spots in Austin. The Migas taco is legendary, and everything is super fresh. Pro tip: their homemade tortillas and salsa make the experience. (Also vegan- and vegetarian-friendly!)
š El Tacorrido
This is Christianās go-to when he needs something quick and solid. Theyāve got several locations, and the food is consistently good. Great for those days when youāre running around town showing homes and need a taco ASAP.
š± Maggieās Must-Have Vegan Options
š® The Vegan Chorizo Taco from Veracruz
Yes, weāre mentioning them again because they really do it all. The vegan options are so good you might not even miss the meat.
šŖ© The Vegan Mushroom Pastor from The Vegan Nom
Flavor-packed and totally satisfying, The Vegan Nom is a staple on Austinās east side. Bonus points for the fun, funky vibe.
š® Curries & Cauliflower at Nissi Vegan Mexican Cuisine
This food truck near South First is a hidden gem. Not exactly ātraditional tacos,ā but if you like bold, creative flavors, this oneās a must-try.
š§ What to Expect from Austin Tacos (Especially If You're New)
If youāre coming from out of state, donāt expect a Taco Bell-style hard shell with ground beef and shredded cheddar. Austin tacos are diverse, fresh, and wildly creative.
Youāll find:
Handmade corn or flour tortillas (yes, that makes a huge difference)
Fillings ranging from barbacoa to grilled shrimp to vegan brisket
Salsas that vary from smoky to habanero hotāyouāve been warned
Breakfast tacos, which are their own sacred category
Taco trucks are everywhere, and some of the best meals in town are served from a trailer in a gravel lot with picnic tables and string lights.
š The Scene Is Always Changing
Weāll be the first to admitāweāve been in Austin long enough that we get a little set in our ways. We find a favorite and stick with it... but we also know the taco scene is constantly evolving.
